Year-one courts in the city

Eight parks to start, most of them inside Richmond, plus Rockwood in Chesterfield and Belmont in Henrico, because that is where the metro actually plays.

• Byrd Park, 600 S. Arthur Ashe Boulevard. The big complex by the Carillon. Evening sessions are the point.
• Battery Park, 2803 Dupont Circle. Arthur Ashe learned the game here. The courts are still public.
• Forest Hill Park, 4021 Forest Hill Avenue. South of the river. Lake, hills, and a Saturday rotation.
• Westover Community Center, 1301 Jahnke Road. Smaller sessions on Jahnke. Easier to park, easier to meet.
• Bryan Park, 4308 Hermitage Road. A huge northside park. Follow the note or you will find the azaleas.
• Broad Rock Community Center, 4615 Ferguson Lane. South Richmond, at the community center. Stay on your side of the river.

Byrd is the complex — self-lighted, twelve courts, on Arthur Ashe Boulevard. Battery is smaller and historically the court that matters: Arthur Ashe learned the game there, and the lights are push-button. Forest Hill is south of the river. Bryan is the big northside park. Westover and Broad Rock are neighborhood rooms.

How a session works

A strip carries a format, a level band, a start time, and a count. Open play rotates. King of the court keeps the winners on and the next pair walking in. A tournament is a posted draw with an end time. Singles and matches are a player and a court. Lessons, coaching, and ball machines sit on the same list.

Bring a racquet, water, and a can of balls if you have one. If the named court is taken when the group arrives, everyone moves together.

Levels

Sessions are marked by level so a 2.5 and a 4.5 are in different draws. On the join form, “Not sure yet” opens a short placement. We keep an internal estimate for matching.

Greater Richmond

The city is the start. Henrico is Short Pump, Glen Allen, Tuckahoe, and Varina, with Belmont for the north. Chesterfield is Midlothian, Chester, and Bon Air, with Rockwood on Courthouse Road. Hanover is Mechanicsville and Ashland. The Tri-Cities are Petersburg, Hopewell, and Colonial Heights. West and outer is Goochland, Powhatan, New Kent, and the counties around them: Amelia, Charles City, Dinwiddie, King and Queen, King William, Prince George, and Sussex.
